Landscape architects and landscape designers are known for using time as a tool for creativity. The best landscape designs contain many ideas and elements that were conceived before the design is built or installed. Some of these are seen and used in the design, while others are discovered while a design is being constructed or installed. But most often it takes many cycles of looking and thinking to achieve a design or composition that meets both the brief and the client’s standards.

Every landscape design requires trial and error. This is true even when we use computer generated landscape designs. There is no use wishing that you could have seen things differently, or that you had done something differently in your design process, than what you had in mind. It’s better to embrace the fact that you may need to make adjustments and refine as you go.

One thing that you can always control is your time. If you can’t seem to find the time to put something on paper or share it with someone, then perhaps there isn’t enough time to do it. If you have used up all your ideas in one area, then you will need to bring a change of scenery.

Using computers as an aid to visualization can be a good thing. But don’t let a tool like computers lead you away from your own creativity. Design, ideas and innovation can come from anywhere and at any time. You just need to let them in.

Work in your office and on your computer. Look at nature. Walk around the neighborhood. Look at a different section of the city. Once your mind is open, creativity can flow.

When this is done, the possibilities for creativity are almost limitless.

What I have noticed in many workspaces is that they are very sterile. I am looking for something a bit more unique than the usual designations of, “This is the creative area.” If your workspace is a design office, then perhaps you should change it up a bit and make it a bit more stimulating. Take a few pictures of what the space looks like now and start looking at these items. Is there a nature study in there? A birdwatching nook? What about a back patio or outdoor kitchen? If your workspace contains an outdoor element like a pool, then why not take advantage of the outdoors and your workspace at the same time? If there are plants inside, why not try planting some outside? If the space is too bland and boring, a little color and a bit of personality might help inspire and motivate. I’ve heard that walking around in nature relaxes and calms the mind. So go for a walk and take a look at your workspace. If it needs some help, then you might need to throw some paint around a bit. Perhaps a few pillows or some plants will also be nice to have. You may even want to consider incorporating a few inspirational photos to help get your creative juices flowing.

As you are looking at your workspace, ask yourself, “What does this space need to help it be more productive?”

What do you need to be more productive? A bigger monitor? A better chair? Noise machines? Fresh flowers? Things to do to help you stay focused? When thinking about this, try to get the most bang for your buck.

There are many benefits to having an office in a home. Home offices can increase productivity in a great number of ways. Not only does it help with work, but it helps the home and family as well. An office is also much easier to clean than the typical spaces that many of us typically use for work.

There are some things that you should consider when thinking about having a home office.

It should be convenient.

Make sure that your office space is within easy access. If your office is going to be located in a bedroom, it should be nearby. If you are going to have a home office in a basement or garage, it should be in close proximity to where the majority of your work is done. You don’t want to walk to your office in the middle of the night if the space is down the hall from your bedroom or laundry room.

It should be quiet and roomy.

Consider what your family needs and make sure that your home office is going to be quiet and spacious enough for your needs. If there are children in the home, you want to make sure that the space can easily be cleaned and that the noise from the outside will be muffled and not be an issue.

If your office is located in a basement, try to think of how you are going to ventilate the space. Make sure that any exhaust fans you choose are placed as far away from the work area as possible.

It should be close to a bathroom.

If you are going to work at home, you need to have the ability to go to the bathroom without having to cross a work area. You also want to make sure that your office is easy to reach. You can put the desk close to your bed if you choose. You can also put the desk in a spare room so that you have access to a bathroom if you need it.

It should have storage and space.

There are many reasons why having a home office is a good idea, but they don’t end there. Make sure that you have space for your files and supplies. Make sure that there are shelves that you can put books on and the space is easily accessible. Keep all your supplies within reach and out of the way.
